Our Freshman Year of Vet School….A year in review

Winner, Foot in Mouth Category
Courtney Butts, University of Florida

They say, “Hindsight is 20/20.”
Well, looking back on our first year of vet school is anything but pretty.
We started the year off naïve, excited, and ready to take on the world.
But, after that first day in gross anatomy I thought, “I’m definitely going to hurl.”
The lectures kept coming and the material was overflowing,
We thought, “How can we manage all of this?”, but we just kept going.

We learned origins, insertions, innervations and blood supplies,
We memorized PDA, PCR, and millions of histology slides.
We overcame lecture after lecture and anatomy practicals galore,
White cells and red cells and T-cells and more.
Classes like Molecular Biology had us asking, “What was the point of this class?”
While Embryology made us say, “It was truly a miracle that I even passed.”

Then came our first hell week of many that year,
After immunology, ophthalmology, and endocrinology we thought we were in the clear.
We thought it would all be downhill until winter break and that we had reached our peak,
Oh, but wait kids, you still have Neurology to try to learn in four weeks.
The pain was so terrible, but we finished it somehow,
We actually finished our first semester!! It’s time to relax meow!

So we took some time off to get our heads straight,
And two short weeks later we were back at the starting gate.
Cardio, Respiration, and Repro, oh my,
What kind of life have I chosen for myself and why?
We managed to get through these courses without a glitch,
However, we still always giggled when our professor said, “bitch.”

Then began large animal anatomy which was a beast of a different kind,
The smell will surely haunt my nightmares for the rest of time.
Horses and cows and even a chicken we dissected,
However, large animal anatomy rocked way more than we had expected.
As a class, we were growing together as one,
One big, happy, dysfunctional family of fun!

On Facebook is where you could find most of us before a big exam,
We would post videos, clever comments, and anything not to cram.
We were there for each other to support and to guide,
To give good advice or the number to the suicide hotline.
The bonds that you make during the first year of vet school are unbreakable,
The bonds built after pulling an all nighter just to get a C- are unshakeable.

G.I. and hematology went okay and weren’t really a big deal,
But many, many awkward moments were had in Renal, for real.
So, we rocked Animal Systems II and Animal Systems III,
We just had to make it through nutrition, behavior, and radiology.
It seemed easy enough and we thought we would be fine,
Until we heard the words, “These slides will not be posted online.”

Oh well, that’s unfortunate but we can still pass,
Until we heard, “The professor has a roster and calls your name out in class.”
But, nevertheless, we made it through safe and sound,
Summer was finally here and we had one year down.
So, looking back I guess it wasn’t as bad as it seemed,
If you don’t count the lack of sleep, exercise and overall personal hygiene.

We are one fourth doctors and it will all be worth it in the end,
But let’s not overlook the most important part…We will NEVER be freshman again!!!
