Vet Candy Guide to Vet School connects veterinary students with tips and advice from a network of top influencers and experts.   

Montclair, New Jersey – Veterinary school is known to be one of the most challenging and demanding professional programs in existence. Mental health issues have a concern in the profession, especially with the younger generation.  In fact, according to a 2011 study by Kansas State University, veterinary medicine students are also more likely to struggle with mental health issues than their human medicine counterparts, with more than one out of three students showing signs of depression during their first year.

Boulder Night

Wellness Support Fund
SAVMA's Wellness Committee

The SAVMA Wellness Committee is offering funding to veterinary students and veterinary school organizations that wish to promote physical, mental, and emotional health at their college of veterinary medicine.

In light of the growing body of evidence indicating high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression in the veterinary profession, the committee recognizes that there is a considerable need to transform the culture of veterinary schools into one that is safe, promotes self-awareness, and encourages healthy living habits.  The SAVMA will award up to $2,500.00USD each cycle to student applicants demonstrating the need for assistance with a project, lecture, or event(s) that will foster physical or mental wellness in their respective college, on an as needed basis.

Apply here today! Must be a SAVMA member to apply. The committee will accept applications until December 31, 2018 Applicants may apply either to be reimbursed for a project retroactively or proactively. Fill out completed application form and send additional required materials (receipts, itineraries, etc.) to savmawellness@gmail.com.

Supporter of Student Wellbeing Award

Supporter of Student Wellbeing Award
SAVMA's Wellness Committee 

The SAVMA Wellness Committee would like to recognize and acknowledge an individual faculty or staff members that goes above and beyond to promote student wellbeing at their institutions. This may include, but is not limited to, promoting mental, physical, spiritual and emotional intelligence amongst their students, creation or support of wellness initiatives and programming at their institutions, or serving as a role model that demonstrates the importance of self-care. 

Awarded faculty or staff will receive compensation up to 1500$ for travel to and from SAVMA Symposium 2019 in Athens, Georgia, where they will be recognized and receive an award for their efforts for student wellbeing. 

The nominating student will also receive a 200$ Stipend for their submission efforts.

Wellness Committee Grants

Financial Wellbeing Grant
SAVMA's Wellness Committee

The SAVMA Wellness committee recognizes that financial wellbeing is an important facet of veterinary student wellness, so the committee is offering funding to SAVMA chapters that wish to provide additional information on financial matters to their student bodies. Realizing that guest speakers may have costly honorariums and travel expenses, the SAVMA Wellness Committee will award up to $2,000 USD annually to one SAVMA chapter demonstrating the need for assistance with a project, lecture, or event(s) that will foster financial wellbeing in their respective college, on an as needed basis. The project, lecture, or event(s) is expected to be accessible to all SAVMA members in the chapter.

The committee will accept applications until October 1, 2018. Applicants may apply either to be reimbursed for a project retroactively or proactively. All grant winners are required to submit a 500 word or less program report detailing the success of the event and including pictures, along with all receipts within a month of the event. Fill out completed application form and send additional required materials (receipts, itineraries, etc.) to savmawellness@gmail.com.
